Science Project
This year the students will be involved in an ongoing Monarch Butterfly
research and population growth project. Students will monitor and
record data on such aspects as egg laying by the butterflies, the
discovery and movement of infant caterpillars into the safe growth and
development enclosure, the amount of plants necessary for support of
growing caterpillars, the number of chrysalises formed and the
successful hatching and release of adult butterflies.
Costs for this project will be in the purchase of milkweed plants from
area nurseries for sustaining both a caterpillar and adult butterfly
population. Milkweed plants cost between $3.50 - $5.00 depending upon
places of purchase and the number of plants needed per month.
Students will create an ongoing photographic record of progress as well
as extensive data collection, assimilation-display and analysis. We
will do much of this work on our classroom computers. There will also
be weekly written reports detailing current status. We also hope to have
classroom displays for all to discuss and share knowledge about as we
gather information.
Extras
All classrooms use the items below and
from time to time run out of them. While we hope to have these things
on hand, plastic ware is for special meals and when those things are
forgotten. Students should still strive to bring a napkin and a spoon
if eating their lunch requires them.
